The 333 HP version is a great match for this heavy vehicle. I seriously considered the TDI, but in Southern Cal, diesel is about the same price as premium (sometimes a bit more sometimes a bit less) and factoring in the $4,000 price difference, I calculated it would take me more than 10 years to make the difference. I chose the higher performance for less total cost of ownership.
(unless of course if gas spikes to $10/gal)

+1 for TDI.
we don't do any towing but do travel.... our last trip from TX to CA yield a mix of 31MPG which is more than we were hoping for...
great car and excellent gas mileage....

Just a quick FYI
Even thought the 2013 TDI is also a 3.0 it is a new generation engine different from the 2012 and older TDI. The new engine (to the US market) is higher in torque and fuel mileage. 240HP with 406 ft/lb torque (at like 1700 RPM) 17 city/25 highway EPA mileage. Remember the Q7 has a 5500# curb weight vehicle.
Same engine will be offered in the A8/A8L later in MY2013.....
Word is that there will be Diesel engines offered across the board for 2014
Any other questions, I'd be glad to find out some answers.......

The mpg specs for the TDI seem low to me. At 70mph I get 30 mpg and can get over 600 miles on a tank. Personally I think it has plenty of power and feels the same if I'm alone in it or full of passengers. I love the low rpm power it has. I'd buy the TDI again definitely.

wow, don't know what you guys are driving, but I don't find the TDI slow at all- in sport mode my 2011 TDI is plenty fast...I certainly don't expect a sports car, and am darned impressed with the vehicle. I had a 2009 with the 6 speed, and it was slower than the '11 with the 8 speed (2009 totaled by jackass who left turned in front of me...on the plus side I learned how safe these things are).

Just drove our 2011 TDI from Des Moines to Chicago, 355 miles and my distance till empty was also 355 miles when I got there. 710 mile range total! Did the trip in 5.5 hours at 80 mph, sometimes 85 with speed of traffic. Average mpg was 28.6 and I was not driving like I wanted to conserve fuel. Also there were 5 passengers. Not saying the tdi is better but trips like this it's hard to imagine 6,000 pounds traveling and performing any better. Not to mention how quiet and comfortable it is to take on a trip.

Given that both are forced induced, would passing uphill at altitude yield the advantage of one over the other. Passing slow people going uphill over a mountain pass in the winter to reach a ski resort is difficult if one doesn't have enough ooomph. Currently our Q5 T2.0 is excellent, but I am considering getting a Q7 as well. Thoughts for this scenario?
