Now I'm curious, has there been any failures on a a gasser or have they all been on TDI's?

I've never heard of a gasser crank failure on here, and if your powering a supercharger those things tend to be far more robustly built than us with just an aircon/alternator/steering.

however that engine is far more common in the sedans, and they could be having crank issues thats not popping up in this quiet sub.

Honestly I've only seen one failure one the gas platform so it might not actually be much of an issue.

Default DIY?

Hi all, are most of you replacing this yourselves and does the front bumper need to be removed? Does anyone have a link to a diy or would be willing to do a quick write up on this? After reading this thread and checking my 2012 TDI with 42k miles, looks like mine may go soon. Dealer quoted 3+ hours of labor for the pulley and wants $1200 for the pulley installed and another $350 for the belt. Thanks!

The 2nd gen (2013+) are several inches shorter and have more room between the rad and the block, on mine it seems totally doable w/out assuming the service position.. however, I've not scoped out a 1st Gen well enough to make that assessment.

Tackled mine today. Was able to change it in a couple hours without removing the front bumper or fan and feel 100% better about driving the Q7 again!
