All my previous Audis have had some 1st gear transmission whine, but I notice on this new one a hissing noise that I had assumed was the direct injection. It's *really* loud if you open the hood with the engine running.

Definently Cool, really like it, its also in there in the S6 though not as loud.

With babies in the back, we rarely drive with windows open to have noticed.

I also have a 2008 Q7 with a wine/ wistle noise that is RPM related... The dealer has had it for a month! and are stumpped!!
Was your resolved, what was the out come?

I purchased my '07 Q7 4.2 recently and having owned several Audis, Porsches that noise also concerned me. I'm not an expert in this field, so I started to dig a bit. Here in Chicago we have quite amount of Audi knowledgeable guys with good inputs on this. I was told it is a timing chain, which is better than belt but creates a noise.

Hey all, I just purchased a 2008 A6 4.2 S-Line and it also makes quite a whistle when rev'd, you can really hear mine start right above an idle. I was a little concerned about it, still am, but maybe less so after reading this thread.

Curious if the original poster ever figured it out?

I am taking it in for service next week and was going to ask my audi guy about it, see if they have an answer. My biggest concern is if it's a bad timing chain issue, or maybe the AC pump (which in the C6 A6's I believe is driven off the crank shaft and serious bad news if it goes out).

I agree it sounds cool (sounds like a supercharger or turbo), would feel much better if I knew it was "normal".

Has anyone ever dug any deeper into this? I bought a 2011 S5 a few weeks ago and get the same thing. Dealer and 2 different mechanics told me it was a normal sound for the 4,2.
