I just heard from the dealer that my 2010 3.6 Graphite Grey Q7 hits the dock in NY on March 12, to the dealer by March 19, then in my garage shortly after. I'm real excited, but a little concerned by a lot of the talk on the site about the 4.2 and the TDIs. I'm sure I'm not the only person to order a plain old (upgraded of course) 3.6, but it doesn't seem like that engine gets a lot of love. Any issues I need to understand? I don't plan to offroad or haul heavy loads, so I figured the 3.6 was plenty of engine for me.

Well, the 3.0 TDI is one heck of an engine but so is the 3.6 too. I have one on a White Q7 and I can say that the adverticed 280 horses all seem to be available when you step on it especially in S mode. Arounbd 8 seconds from zero to 60 is not that bad for a vehicle with over two tons of mass.
In Europe "everything" is diesel only because of the fuel pricing. Due to taxes on fuel diesel has been lower cost for very long time and it usually gives better fuel mileage too. That would be the real reason here in U.S. now to get diesel since the gas price is up at the same level as diesel but the difference in fuel mileage is not that big between 3.6 and 3.0 TDI.
You will like your Q7 a lot. At first it might feel a bit hard as it does have a very good suspension but you will grow to love this car and after a month or so you do not want to drive your other vehicles any more.

Yep, the 3.6 gets love. It's just different to the other models.
In the USA, it's the workhorse of the range. Priced lower, wider appeal. Solid performance. The 3.6 V6 is an evolution of the VW/Audi engine range over the years.

Love is measurable. 3.6 was = big love now???. Below is total count and 2010 specifically.
This represents data count drawn from posts/posters on AW and QW. It may not represent the whole market but cant be too far off by percentage.
Total count
3.6 FSI 192
4.2 FSI 168
3.0 TDI US/Canada 35
3.0 Total count 88
4.2 TDI 8
2010
2010
3.6 FSI 2
4.2 FSI 5
3.0 TDI US/Canada 21
3.0 Total count 22
4.2 TDI 5
Looks like a shift in American thinking OR a shift in Audi thinking BUT the reality as we know it the US and Canadian customers as in WE the people on the forum have been screaming this for absolutely years.
So go ahead pat yourselves on the back, give each other awards for design and marketing, planning and provision, just bear one thing in mind...........
Demand and supply! You have to listen to demand.

Big Love for 3.6 equated to about $10k less... Also found the light grey moldings on the 4.2 to be less desirable. No 3.0 TDI at the time. Of course I would rather have the additional horses of the 4.2 but so far the 3.6 is great. Do have an ignition coil recall to have done still.

DO NOT SWEAT THIS!! I had an Allroad before this and ride a Ducati. The 3.6 has never let me down, (Although, I miss the turbos of the Allroad at high altitude here in California. ) its plenty fast off the line and has great passing pick-up, not to mention that on the highway, I've gotten as high at 24 mpg loaded up. If you care even a little bit about gas mileage, you are going to be really, really happy with the 3.6. I love it, in-fact I wouldn't upgrade to 4.2 if I had the choice again.

I was in the same boat, but after test driving the 3.6, determined that it is powerful enough for our needs. We live in the bay area of California, so mostly around town driving with the occasional trip to Santa Cruz/Monterey and Tahoe. Plenty of pep climbing passes and at altitude.
I don't think the motor will ever excite you, but will quietly do its job. The paddle shifters of the S-Line actually come in quite handy for mountain driving.
