Default Brake Warning - Front or Rear?

The replace pads warning light has come on for the first time. Our 2013 has just under 28k miles. Obviously this would be for the front brakes but I am wondering what is typical for the rear? Do they generally get replaced at the same time or is it mainly fronts at this mileage?

To add here, this is my wife's car and she usually takes it in for service. Just found a write-up from the last time which was in June of this year. It indicated pad thickness at 4mm front and 5mm rear. What is the suggest thickness before replacement?

3mm would be time to do them, you can go down to 2mm without any problem, depends how much you drive city vs highway. Remember to remove the rear disc if you plan on changing them, you will need an M16 XZN bit to remove the bolts on the caliper and do not reuse the bolts since they are torque to yield.

Thanks for the response. When you say "rear disc" are you referring to the rotor? I heard about the special part but is that just for the rear? This isn't required for the front, correct?

Also, do you know when the sensor goes off? Is it at 3mm so, for example, if I just change the front will it go off again for the rear later when its time? I am assuming if it went off again it would be for the rears rather than the then newer fronts.

Thanks.

Yes I meant the rotor in the back, in the front if I remember correctly the bolts are 21mm. You can have the rotors resurfaced if they are still within the specs but remember you have only 1mm on each side that can be removed before you will need new rotors. On my experience the sensor goes off at 4mm, there is plenty of vendors that have em in stock for cheap.

Thanks again. I am going to check the rotors with some calipers first. If needed I would likely replace them rather than trying to resurface. I'll probably hold off on the rears for now.
