Changing out the center console?
Hi folks,
Was wondering if anyone has a write-up or advice on swapping out an entire center console?
The one in my car has some scratches on the side areas which sit on both sides of the MMI controls and also the armrest and cup holders looked kinda meh. I got a hold of a excellent condition center console, including armrest, cup holder and such...so basically want to remove mine and replace the entire thing.
Here's a pic of the parts that are scratched:

So over the weekend I changed out the center console and the arm-rests. It was pretty straightforward.
- remove the MMI and the surround. There are a number of vids on this, but basically this is removing the shifter cover and then basically use a combo of brute strength plus some plastic popsicle sticks to help pry up without causing damage.
- remove the silver surround bezel, which I did with a small flat head screw driver
- Disconnect everything CAREFULLY
- Pulling everything up and cleaning it THOROUGHLY
- there are only about 6 bolts in the front that hold down the center console up front and 4 more where the arm rest goes...they are pretty easy to remove.
- remove the rear vent (i made a puller using wire hanger) and then push the rear seat controller out and remove ALL connectors - there is a small connector on the actual vent as well, which is a PITA to remove.
- you basically pull the center console from the back and lift up gently, then you'll be able to get it out. BTW, move the shifter to the D position to make it easier on yourself.
- I installed the new center console which was in very good shape and now have a used unit in the garage...
