if you do not have adaptive suspension you do not have 'tow mode'.

I do not have adaptive suspension, but do have the tow pack. When a trailer is detected, I've found that stop-start is disabled. Am I the only one?

Do you mean the keyless buttons on the center console? Mine continue to work as advertised when in the Towing mode.

Also, the minute I plug in the trailer electrical plug, Towing Mode is detected automatically without my having to select it manually. The reverse is true when I pull the connector.

Default What if I don’t have tow mode?

I have a 2008 Q7 with the 4.2 v8 but it didn’t come with a tow package. I installed one and am about to tow a 16’ cargo trailer across the country. Should I tow in manual mode, sport mode or just regular? I tried towing in manual the other day and noticed that the transmission is much more locked up than when it’s in standard mode. I’ve noticed going up a hill that the Tach will go up but it may not fully downshift to a lower gear. I’m concerned about the transmission overheating if it’s not more locked into gear. Thankfully it’ll be cold out so that may help. Any advice or tips are appreciated.

Did you use the factory parts, including the trailer tow harness and controller? If so, it will know the trailer is plugged in to the 7-way and take care of shifting, as it enters a tow-haul mode. I never had a problem with my old '07 4.2, but I did not do any mountain runs with it. It had factory tow...

I'm in manual mode coming down a mountain pass, with or without the trailer.. but then Ive got to keep it in manual mode once I level out for a little while after to adapt back to normal behavior.. if I sit in manual mode for a while in the mountains it learns that I like to rev the hell out of the motor and then tries to continue driving like that once I put it back in Drive on normal grade roads.

Default All aftermarket

Unfortunately everything is aftermarket as I couldn’t seem to track down factory parts or any instructions on where to find the harnesses to attach it. I had hoped to get the parts off a salvage vehicle but never found one. Just took the car to the mechanic today to deal with oil leaking from the valve cover gaskets. It’s been leaking for years but very little. However, once I put a trailer on it, the leak increased and the smell of burning oil is very noticeable every time I stop. If anyone’s had oil leaking onto the exhaust, chime in. Pretty sure it’s just the valve covers and cam seals but I’ve heard the oil filter housing is notorious for leaking as well, but it doesn’t seem like an oil leak from the filter housing would hit the exhaust and burn off like I’m experiencing.

Any Audi V8 engine I've ever had leaked from pretty much everywhere. I had a 1990 V8 quattro that I did the auto-to-manual transmission swap on, and it was a leaker (but wicked fun chipped). The '07 4.2 Q7 leaked from the VCG's like yours. My '90 Coupe quattro with a 4.2L ABH/ABZ hybrid leaks from, well, where doesn't it leak is a better question. I thought that thing was on fire one day from all the oil burning off...But anyway, the older the V8 gets mileage wise, the more it's going to leak. They are fantastic, especially the Q7's 4.2 since it is the only V8 related directly to the RS4's engine (not joking).

But, I bought my Westfalia (factory) kit from a parts store online. I can't remember if it was ECS or a place down south (GA?). It was too long ago that I did the 3.6 I had (yes, I sold it a month ago, and I do miss it at times). But, there are posts on here about how to tie in the factory harness, where the connectors are, what coding to do, etc. I just used forum resources when I did the 3.6. The 4.2 was factory tow, as is the TDI we still have.
