Default He does work for Audi, Porsche, VW, Mercedes.

Funny thing is that he drives a 20+ year old BMW with multiple colors from repairs. He is a typical engineer who could care less about what he drives. He would rather spend more money on a bike.

Default Don't get diesel to save money

OK- if you are in a market where there is really cheap diesel the sums may add up, but it is still the wrong reason.
If you wanted to economy motoring you are in the wrong forum!! A q7 is not about saving money, you are spending money in return for enjoyment.

Consider this: What if you could buy a v8 instead of a v6 - yet get better economy. Would you only choose the v8 is it saved enough fuel to recoup the extra outlay??
The equivalent diesel DRIVES better- they fuel economy is a bonus.
Consider:
3.6FSi 0..100km=8.5 sec
4.2FSi 0..100km=7.4 sec
4.2TDi 0..100km=6.4 sec yet is more economical than 3.6FSi!!
Standing start times don't flatter the diesel at all and actual performance difference is between the two 4.2s is much greater than this. In gear acceleration times are as much as halved!!

Moving from an equivalent gasoline to high tech diesel like Audis- you gain enough performance to easily justify the extra price. The fuel savings just help you feel even better about it and makes trips to the bowser less frequent.

There is no reason for diesel to be more expensive
