Looks like everyone loves the GL. The Merecedes GL was just voted best SUV by Motor Trend. I wonder if the news stand issue will have rankings of the other SUV's tested?? Will be interested to see where the Q7 ends up.

The judges must have been scared away from the Q due its mini-van styling. Oh well...

To be realistic the q7 has comparitively limited offroadability and is cramped for third row occupants. The judges use certain criteria and obviously give more weight to room, utility and versatility than to style and roadability.
The Audi has no low range tranfer box either.

It's all a matter of what people expect of such a car. I will personally probably use it more offroad than most, but I go out of my way to find the easy way around because there is no novelty or play value in it for me. On the other hand I do quite a bit of fast road work as well, so the bias suits me just fine.

It is a bit big to fit in standard UK parking bays though. My wife has just found out that it is bigger than the Range Rover and as she will use it on a daily basis, she is a bit nervous.

Motor Trend weighs the off road much higher then most people who actually drive the SUV. Obviously, it isnt a bad thing to be chosen as the SUV of the year by anybody. But it comes down to personal taste and needs. Don't put too much into any ratings you see. Go out and judge for yourself!

The single model most responsible for that species disappearing altogether from the NA Market. I think that was the one with the three lug nuts per wheel. Seems to me there was something weird about the drivetrain too. Oh well, even if Motor Trend over looked that stuff, I'm sure it wasnt too important.
