I'm planning a mod for my Q7 to move the AMI connection from the box within the center console to between the Speedometer and Tach.
What I'm planning:
Get a 6ft Black iPod Dock Extension cord from:
http://www.cablejive.com/extendercable.html
Connect the female end to the current AMI connection,
and then run that extension thru the center console out underneath the dash near the steering column.
Then bring the new male end up behind the "fabric-like" skirt
that bridges the steering column.
I'll Dremel out a space for the ipod jack to fit through that bridge and glue it in place.
My goal is to be able to mount the iPhone in a heads up display within the center console so that i can keep eyes on NYC Traffic cams (App: NY Traffic Cam) and a few other Nav based apps.
I'm also hoping having it eye level will also keep me from constantly leaving it in the car when ever i head to work or head into the house.
I'll let you know how i do with the Mod.

. . . the functionality of the color DIS, etc. But if you have something in mind, that we're not thinking of, let us know.
When an iPhone is connected to the AMI, you don't have the ability to select songs directly from the iPhone. So I guess my question is, how is having the phone placed in the location you propose going to gain you any functionality that you wouldn't already have by just "extending" the AMI to the center console?
Just curious, that's all. These kinds of projects interest me as I'm a bit of a tech geek.
PS I used to drive a Q7 so I'm not a troll, I swear

. . . seen just about every amazing Audi out there! Much appreciated. Now if only I could turn that sweet avant into a job with Audi World, haha. Let me know if you have any openings.
Great stuff from Paris btw, appreciate the hard work and pics!

The MMI will still play the music from the iPod part of the iPhone, but you can still work the rest of the phone if you needed to while it's connected.
Honestly, i just like the phone mounted near me - not hidden in a box out of sight.

I thought about a proclip, like i had with my '05 Allroad, but i really do like the clean dash look.
I used to have two mounts SatRadio and iPod in the Allroad, and don't want to go that way again.
This DockMod is pretty clean for my tastes.

if you have an old ipod or buy a new one, and leave it in the glove box. then use you Iphone via bluetooth.
then one a week, take the ipod from your q7 to sync it with your new music.
It might cost you cheaper than your Mod

I love having my iPhone "untethered" that way I can use apps, the phone or text (when stopped of course). I think the idea of using traffic camera apps while driving is a poor choice. Anything that will take your eyes from the road is a bad idea. I realize the "pull" of the iPhone apps too, I love that thing and I know that if I'm focused on what the phone is doing my attention is not on the road.
Just my 2 cents

I keep an 80 Gig 4th gen iPod in my glovebox for the audio (one in my Q7, one in my A5) then keep my iPhone with me in the center console (not attached to anything). Makes life much easier, and i'm not damaging or modding parts that would make it harder to sell later.
