Default Need roof-mount bicycle rack advice.

We need to carry 4 mountain bikes for 2 adults and 2 kids. We have a 4-bike hitch mount but there is just no way I could get all 4 bikes on it.

We already have Thule Aero Bars and cannot decide between fork mounts or arm mounts. Which one is better, more stable, easier to mount, etc?

I would appreciate any advice.

Default I've always preferred fork mount as they've always seems much more stable to me.

The only problem is that the racks currently available to the Q7 (Audi, Thule - EU spec) have fixed widths load bars. In Thule's case, it's only 127cm which is about 50". You could easily squeeze 4 bikes on top (alternating forward/rear facing), but if you use Fork mount carriers, you'll need to make sure you have room inside for the front wheels if you can't squeeze in the wheels carriers somewhere.

My dilemma is that my cargo box (Evolution 1600) will take up 33" leaving me 17" for 2 bikes, 1 tricyle and 1 kids bike. Had I been smart, I would have bought my Q7 with a hitch so I'd have additional room/flexibility.

Could you expand on this? I've got an 08 on order with a hitch. I was planning on getting a bike mount for 2 adults and 2 kids. I've never used a hitch mount before. Do I need to get a 5 bike mount for 4 bikes? (they will be road bikes if that makes a difference)

Default I've had the 4-bike hitch mount for several years now...

and only had to actually try to mount 4 bikes this year. I don't want to spend the money on a 5-bike hitch mount but yes, it should be able to handle 4 bikes. Our kids' mountain bikes have the non-standard frames so this adds to our dilemma. I've even tried those bar adapters that connect to the stem and seat post. I think if all the bikes are closer in size, it would be easier to get pedals and handlebars out of the way.

Thanks. I was planning on mounting 3 bikes on the hitch mount and one on the roof.

I'd definitely go with the fork then. No problems with odd shaped frames and very easy to use

Default Thanks for the reply.

After my 08 arrives I'll have to try mounting the 4 bikes, 3 of which will have the bar adapters, and see if I should get the 5 bike version instead. Thanks for the heads up.
