Q7 3.0T s line rattle when start up.

My 2002 A6 4.2 has done this since about 10k miles. Now has around 90k with no problems. I noted it at every service for the record but have had no issues. I agree that it sounds really bad.

Same Issue
I recently purchased a 2011 q7 3.0T s line and love the SUV but am embarrassed to start it... Most times i start it, especially when cold.. there is a rattle in the motor that lasts a few seconds and seems to be on the drivers side.. Ive ruled out any external noises like heat shields. I had it to the dealer and they say its normal, they read me a bulletin from Audi saying it takes time to get oil up to the heads or valves,i forget the exact term they used as i was very disappointed.. and it may rattle for a few seconds. this just doesn't seem acceptable from a vehicle of this caliber!! Has anyone encountered this in the Q7 3.0T and did you have any solutions?? Thanks

Mini Coopers have this same issue. Its the timing chain tensioner / guides. Not sure about the Audis, but in the Minis its very sensitive to oil level. If its at all low it gets worse. As long as it goes away quickly after engine start its normal.

My 3.6 rattles at start-up. It's oil related, lasts a few seconds while pressure builds. It's either a lifter or two or the oil-pressure operated tensioner. On my '98 A6 (112k miles) I just had to replace the driver side cam chain tensioner and three intake lifters on #4 cylinder.

I am a mechanic myself, but have never touched one of these.

Rattle on start up
Just been told by Audi Service, 99% sure that it is the Timing chain tensioner that is the problem. $9k to fix.......

Evidently the engine has to come out? Seems quite unreasonable, parts are probably only a few hundred dollars.
Even if parts were $1k, that would mean they need to spend 80hrs doing the work at a rate of $100/hr. Did they give you an estimate with the break-down?
