They're both coming out in the near future, and the X5d will have 265 horsepowers and over 400 lb/ft of torque. In the 3 series, it will get about 23/33mpg, whereas the Q7 gets about 25mpg mixed cycle.
Both look compelling. Q7 looks nice, is bigger, handles just as well.
X5 smaller, more agile, BMW performance, free maintenance, etc...

here is the bottom line:
BMW always makes the best engines. Audi is all tech and best inetrior. The audi and the x5 share the same transmision if I am not mistaken. The Gl, b/c of its tall roof looks much bigger, Hence, worse handling.( it is 7 speed though)
For me, at this stage, they are all good, and you just choose the one that fits your lifestyle and taste the best.

I've been looking at both also. I think diesel is compelling. The post mentioning the one that fits you and your style, very appropriate. As an avid reader of this forum and x5world.com, I have to say that a large number of posts on the Bimmer discuss problems caused by technology. Posts that are absent on these pages. The X5 is smaller, crisp handling though a little rough since it uses run flats, smaller back seat. The Q7 is more luxurious, better looking interior, less troublesome. With my driving syle, people will always be looking at the tailgate, and the X5's is prettier. Twin turbo in the X5 will need a test drive before deciding. The V12tdi Q7 at 20mpg could be the bomb though.
