You might want to try reading this thread from the top, or doing internet search to locate threads/videos/etc. If it makes 'noise' then it may still be functional, but the mirror may have detached from the clips, etc. See if the mirror is loose inside the mirror housing. Check all the easy stuff you learn from this thread. If the mirror/reflector is firmly mounted, I'd likely try to rotate the housings via switch in car, then rotate back and retry. I've had a fair amount of error codes from one car related to the mirror control switch inside the car, but you can't see those trouble codes w/o a VAGCOM compatible scan tool. If you want to DIY this car, suggest you get the best diagnostic tool for it, the Ross-Tech VCDS. It pays for itself every time you use it.
