Default Q7 Software Updates

Hello all. Q5 owner here, inquiring for my non-forum surfing parents. My parents have a 2008 Q7. They've been told by the dealer there are software updates for the car. My dad wasn't pleased with the price. He asked me if there were alternatives for getting the upgrades. They don't seem to have any problems with their car that prompted the software upgrade discussion.

So...

1. Does the 2008 Q7 work with the VAGCOM
2. Can one obtain software upgrades and install them on their own, or do you have to go through the dealership?

Thanks.

are you referring to map upgrades or firmware or both? on mmi-2g the firmware updates are much simpler on mmi-3g and 3g+ you'll need to connect to gekko network or get sim cards and serial numbers. i have done mmi-2g upgrades for myself and a few other people i know but i know i no longer have the discs... i think 2putt has them now and if you search for him he may be able to help you out. (keep in mind with the mmi stuff it isn't like a firmware or map update like it was on rns-c, rns-d or rns-e units where the map and firmware were on the same disc... now for mmi-2g it is a boot disc, then two others for all the other modules.)

Just firmware. Their Q7 doesn't have nav. As background I haven't done any of my own updates on my car, and other than knowing what a VAGCOM cable is I don't know much about it.

so i am going to guess it is a bluetooth update and hesitation in switching menus update but that's just off the top of my head. i think they charge one hour labor for it these days. if you can get your hands on the disc(s) you can do it yourself but you have to be careful and follow the steps or you'll wind up "bricking" the system.
