Q7 vs. ML 350, X5 and Cayenne
I'm new to this forum and looking for an SUV for my wife. She's not an agressive driver, and actually preferred her 6 cyl X5 over her current SUV, a V8 Toureg. I'm a big Audi fan and currently drive an '07 S8 myself.
I think the Q7's the best of the lot I mentioned above, but something about the Q7's looks are giving me pause. I drove one all out on a go cart track at the Audi Driving Expereince in Chicago and was impressed, but still I'm hesitant.
Opinions please.
Thanks

Well...since you are on a Q7 board, I think that most owners here would tell you to buy a Q7 ;-)
Seriously though, I find the rear end of the Q7 somewhat awkward with the one piece rear hatch-tail light design. Other than that, I love it from a pure aesthetics POV. What does your wife say? If it's her car, she has to like it...

Q7: Sleek styling, muscular stance (with 275/45/20's), menacing countenance,.....
eat-my-dust view from the rear, snarling V8, great technology and features - what's not to like? Love my quartz gray Q7 4.2.

Re: Q7 vs. ML 350, X5 and Cayenne
My wife loves the Q7 and she had a Range Rover before it and a BMW X5 before that and a Mercedes ML before that.
Just make sure it comes with a parking aid front and back or, better still, the reversing camera.
For you and if you want to go offroad, then be aware that the Q7 doesn't have a two speed transfer case so no low range. It has restricted ground clearance and long overhangs at both ends. I liked the X5 just as well as the Q7 but I have to admit that my favorite has to be the Range Rover which my wife found too big. This is puzzling because apart from its height the Q7 is bigger in every dimension. Women eh!

Opinions? This *is* a Q7 forum...
Reasons I like the Q7:
- The styling is fresh and current (albeit a little love it or hate it).
- Features are current as in bluetooth, side assist, adaptive cruise, panorama roof.
- In comparison to others listed it's a good value.
- The cargo area is considerably bigger.
- Ability to seat seven.
Why would I not consider others?
Mercedes ML:
- Aren't they still made in Alabama?
- My father drives Mercedes, not me.
- I don't care for the image it projects.
BMW X5:
- The styling is equally love or hate as the Q7 and I like the Q7 better.
- The cargo area is smaller, dogs won't like that.
- It's really expensive when equipped the same.
- The panorama roof is half-assed.
Cayenne:
- They are five years behind on gadgets.
- The ride is unbearably rough for day to day use.
- Its more overpriced than the X5 which makes the Q7 seem like a steal.

Re: Q7 vs. ML 350, X5 and Cayenne
While, as others have mentioned, this is a Q7 forum, I have been a loyal BMW customer for 11 years, owning a number of BMW's, including 3 x5's. I have also driven the Cayenne, but never owned one. Based on my experience and opinion, the Q7 is the best value. I opted for the 3.6 Premium and do love the car. I will say the BMW seems to be of a little better quality in terms of interior finishings, but the Audi, at least to me, offers much more for the money and, quite frankly, in everyday driving, I can not tell the difference between the Audi and the BMW in terms of on-road behavior.
