You're not imagining it, my Q7 does it too. In fact, my S6 and my S4 both did it as well. It seems like its an Audi drive-by-wire thing. S mode definitely cures it, I find that manual mode does too. In fact, I drive nearly exclusively in manual because I enjoy it. I'm able to get similar mileage to D that way with out that dead pedal feeling.
