I am a photo buff and beginner myself. Unfortunately you would find my photos show more beginner work than not, but I am working on it and the 40D will be a lot of camera for me for a good long while. Started with the Rebel XTi and now wanted to upgrade. I have the Canon EF 50mm F/1.4 USM Lens for more portrait stuff and picked up the Canon EF-S 17-85mm F/4-5.6 IS USM Lens for more all-around stuff.
I feel sorry for family now though. My wife and 2 kids (5 yrs. and 17 mo.) are being chased around with a lens in their face at all times of the day. So much so, that my wife actually asked me to leave them alone and go take pictures of the cars ;-)

LOL...and I thought I was alone in using the family (7yr old girl - madame of the family, 4 yr old boy - joker of the family and 3 mths old boy - smiler of the family) as props!!!
I am in IT and hoping to get into on-line photo gallery in the coming years. I am more a landscape snapper...hence the 10-22mm. I got the EOS 40D with a 17-85mm lens as a package.

ehh, not delved that far yet...however I read Canon do decent flash and so do Metz.
