Default Where is the oil filter housing?

I'm in my garage right now, drained all the oil from the pan, and now need to find the oil filter housing on top of engine. Do I have take off the silver cover from top of engine to get to it? Is it facing upwards or it is somewhere on the side, left, right?

Any replies would be greatly appreciated, esp. with a picture or a link to another thread. I'm sitting here and can't do anything.

thanx

I was told by the dealer that the airbox needed to be removed to access the filter.
Have not seen it for myself however.

Thanx guys. I found it myself already. It's UNDER the engine, not on top of the engine, like written in another thread on this forum for the oil change DYI.

It is not hard to replace the oil filter for this engine but it is always a mess. I would loose the oil filter drain plug (use 6mm hex), then loose the filter cap one turn then remove filter drain plug completely then let it drains for atleast 10 minutes before completely remove the oil filter cap to replace oil filter.[IMG][/IMG]

However, I didn't see the rubber O-ring come out with the old filter, I searched all over, inside the drained oil, on old filter, and inside the housing. Could it be the dealership didn't put one in last time, or that's impossible, as the oil would have leaked out? I'll go look for it again, nevertheless, if I don't find one, I forget how this works, the o-ring goes in first, then the filter, right?

There is no o-ring on the filter. It is on the cap. Look at the picture in your post. It is #3.

I know, I figured it out. I haven't done this in a while and my brainz were on vacation yesterday after breathing all the oil fumes. I figured it out. I wish the filter was on top of the engine and easily accessible as in my beemer.

Now I know how to change oil on the Q7...
