$1000 damage a Spilled liquid shud NOT cause !
LOL... Q7 NOT a dining room table ...you are so clever..
It is a DESIGN FLAW ... especially for a $60K car !! Remember the phrase "Attention to Detail"
Car interior electronics shud not fail when a little liquid is spilled on them especially when the design places the electronics directly below the cupholder...
Then cost $1000 to repair...
I checked with MB, BMW, Porshe, Lexus, Acura and they all claim they seal their interior electronics because spills happen..
Maybe AUDI can learn from their competitors..

[lumburg] yeaahh, looks like I am going to have to disagree with you on this...
I've drove my Q7 for 60,000 miles and managed not to spill liquid in the MMI even though I carefully use the cup holder daily. Bottom line is you seem bitter about your mistake an intent on blaming whoever is easiest. Why don't you contact an attorney and see if you can sue. Let me know how that turns out.

Hi kerryjth, welcome to Audiworld. Here's the last post I made over at Edmunds to you...
It'll also be the first and last one I'll make to you here...

This is going to be my last post regarding this "issue" because it's really not particularly productive to hear you rant and rave over the same thing over and over again. Frankly, it makes this discussion forum far less useful and attractive than other Audi forums.
I don't think anyone here has disagreed with you that placement of the the armrest cup holders with relation to the MMI is a particular good one. If you had stopped to take a breath and actually read/comprehended people's posts, I think you would have seen that.
What I am and have repeated pointed out is that you want to blame Audi for everything and that you don't accept responsibility for your actions. As I stated 8+ months ago...how is it Audi's fault that you knocked over and spilled liquid not once, but twice on the MMI and shorted it out? Again, following your logic, I should blame Apple if I spill coffee on my Macbook and short out the motherboard?
About 4 months ago, I back into a post in my Q7 because I was in a hurry and didn't pay as much attention as I should have. Fortunately, no one was injured but do I blame Audi that the D-pillar creates a large blind spot especially with the 3rd row head rests up? Do I blame Audi that the rear parking sensors take a split second to engage and provide warning? NO It was my fault. I took my lumps, paid my insurance deductible and will be dealing with the fact that my carelessness will lighten my wallet over the next 5 years with my insurance premium increases.
> Now back to the HOST "REALISM" ...... I start to shop for new SUV... BMW or Lexus or Acura ? thoughts ??
Anything but an Audi. Lexus gets raves over customer service, go seek them out first.
peace,
mike

i can repair your MMI unit
I have successfully repaired several MMI control units (A6 and Q7 models) in which the circuit board had liquid spilled on them, and/or the buttons are sticking. Contact me for more information. Don't spend $1000 + at the dealer.
*also in reply to the post about the whole thing being a unit----wrong! the large circular **** and the small circular **** can be replaced separately.

No question that the position of the MMI is poorly done. The cupholders are also fairly shallow which makes the problem worse. Having said this, spilling fluid on the MMI is really not that hard to avoid.
I drove a BMW530i for 6 years, it probably had the crappiest cupholders in the world. These were an add on item that held nothing wider than a can of coke, and the holder clamp was barely an inch from the bottom of the cup. Over time the clamp strength degraded to the point that any turn send the cup flying off into the footwell.
I "worked around" this issue by buying a set of spill-proof coffee mugs small enough to fit (Starbucks has a good line of these)...the Q7 cup holders are a significant step up for me. The ones in the door are great - why not use those for things that are spill-prone?
