The entire MMI unit is clipped in:
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/95304/underneath_mmi.jpg">
It can easily be pulled out by reaching into the shifter "leather" and pulling up gently.
It appears that there are some screws on the back so maybe it is possible to remove the back cover and inspect how easy it is to clean.
On a side note, I wonder how many MMI units are replaced while the original unit is simply cleaned and then resold.

Has any one actually removed/ unpluged and then reinataled the MMI?

<hand goes up>
I did it when I did the AMI integration. It didn't even dawn on me at the time that it would throw an error code. I didn't unhook the battery (way too much work) so it probably did record something but after I VAGged it for AMI, I cleared all the codes to keep my efforts off the dealer radar.
So, to answer your question, "NO", I did not get any visible error message...

I just ran into the same problem on my wifes Q7. The wheel will push, but rotation wont register. Pulled it apart and cleaned it with help from this thread, but nothing. any suggestions??

yes you can split it and clean the board and the pickups on the **** itself. My glass pickups looked to be worn and nothing I did fixed it. I ordered one from ECS (they price matched) to the door for less than $500. No codes and no trace when I ran the VAG.
Good Luck

plastic cover?
Do any of you know of a plastic cover for the MMi control unit. I am thinking of something like a clear plastic keyboard cover type of thing. This of course would be for future spills prevention. Something like this but for the control unit on our Audi's

I just took out my q7 MMi control unit because the same issue, but it was beer in my case, and the control unit does not work at all. I took it out and cleaned it with electronics cleaner from radio shack. I am now waiting 24 hours for it to complete dry before I put it back together, and try it. Do you know of anyone with any luck cleaning sticky substances from the PCB and it working again?

I do not think this has been successful. I had a loaner Q7 which obviously had been spilled on and tried the RS contact cleaner. It helped regain some function, but not completely.
