Default Winter tires /TPMS question

Question:

If I get my new winter tires without TPMS sensors, and I put my summer tires with TPMS sensors in the garage next to my parked car, will I get an error/tpms message after I leave my garage with my winter tires on?

One of the reasons Im asking this is because im not paying $600.00 for TPMS sensors from AUDI and even $200.00 of EBAY seems a bit much for winter tires. The other reason is that on my 2006 Lexus Gs300, if you kept the summer tires next to the car when it was parked, it would keep the TPMS sensor off for the next 80km's or so which was more then enough to get to work and back. Im hoping AUDI has the same feature.

Any input would be great.

Hello there,

It depends on which TPMS system you have as to whether your wheels actually have a sensor.

Mine works on the ABS TCS working out if the rolling radius is less, therefore its low on pressure.

So before you go buying anything its worth checking.

Cheers

As you have the 2007 version yes. Then it depends whether you are in US or EU for legislation that allows you to turn it off in MMI.

So the short answer to my own question was no. I do have TPMS sensors in the wheels and I opted not to buy another set for my winter tires. After picking my car up from the tire shop, my summer tires (with sensors) where inside my vehicle. While driving for the first 20km's, there were no TPMS error lights. After about 20km's, the TPMS light came on and has been on ever since even though my summers tires were in the car and will be stored right beside it in the garage.

it's my understanding that the wheel must be in motion for it to start broadcasting its signal. IMO, a stationary Audi wheel isn't going to be broadcasting anything for the on-board radio to hear.

I think you can get a set of sensors for around $180.

ya I was checking out ebay and I found TPMS sensors for $200.00 shipped then I have to get them installed which would cost at least another $100.00. Ill deal with the light for a few months.

Understood. We have been driving with the annoying light/warnings in our A6 for the past few winters. I guess you get used to it.

You have to make the commitment to get the sensors installed when the tires are being changed, that helps contain the cost.
