Amazing what modern cars are capable of:
.
Not to many years ago, only Jeep Wranglers and similar vehicles would have been able to do this.

Having done this kind of thing (and much scarier) over the years in Colorado with a Jeep Renegade and three Jeep Grand Cherokees, I would say that if he had the right off-road tires, the vid would have been less dramatic. Still, with the higher center of gravity, one mistake and over she goes.

No diff locks and low range anymore.
Amazing what computers do to cars - that's ESP, EDL and TC all doing their job.
Not bad going for alloys and what looked like road tyres!

My thoughts exactly. Currently the VW Amarok Auto 4x4 is turning the pickup market on its head in South Africa, with its small engine, 8 speed gearbox (similar to that in the new Q7) without transfer case but with permanent 4x4 and amazing 4x4 ability (due to computer aided systems). People are having a hard time accepting its abilities - they believe a "real" 4x4" pickup should have low range and a big diesel engine. Despite all the criticism, a pair of Auto Amaroks just completed a journey from East to West Africa along the equator, without any problems. The drivers were extremely impressed with the off-road ability of the vehicles, predicting that in future, all 4x4's will be built like that. Take a look at the Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/voetspore?fref=ts)if your are interested - some amazing pictures around day 48: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?...1142348&type=1 and here: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?...1142348&type=1
VW Australia sponsored the "Carsguide" Crew from the Herald Sun (national newspaper) with a pair of Amarok utes for a crossing of the Simpson Desert.
The main feature of this crossing was the fuel economy - they did the entire crossing on one tank of Diesel with the tanks being wire-sealed and tagged before the crossing started.
