That is needlessly expensive. You can replace two tires, but you just order the new tires with the depth that you need to match the old tires. Tire Rack charges $30 per tire for a custom depth.

I got in an argument with the Ford dealer where they said the new tires should go on the front. I told him he was wrong. He said he has been doing this for eight years, etc, etc. I said to just put them on the rear. He said he would, but would make a note in the computer that I did it against his advice. Whatever.

And my father refuses to listen to me. He "knows" that new tires have to go on the front because the car is FWD so needs good front tires for both traction and steering. He is not able to undo his past views on the matter.

Our Audi dealer did the rotation at 10K, but charged $45 and said it is not included in the complimentary 10K service. I found this odd because the 5K service on my 2016 A6 included rotation, but when I checked the 10K service check list for the Q7, tire rotation isn't on the list.

Prior to the Q7 we had a BMW X5 and I took it to Pep boys for 2 new tires and they flat out refused to put them in front. Later I did a google search and found the same info posted above about new tires on the rear. Ironically, we are in LA, so this all happened in the midst of a multi-year drought so at that time, hydroplaning was the last concern I had!

This is 2 separate issues.

1. Yes, you should rotate to even out the relatively small difference in wear over 10,000 miles. Keeping the better tires on the rear to prevent oversteer is not that important because of the relatively small difference.

2. If you purchase 2 brand new tires to go with 2 worn out tires, then there could be a large difference in grip, so usually you would put the new tires on the rear to prevent oversteer. However, with Audi quattro, you're supposed to keep the tread depth of all four tires to within 4/32" so you may have to buy 4 new tires or shave them down to match.

Given how much audi's understeer, a lil oversteer might balance things out :P

Has anyone tried raising and lowering tire pressure by 2 psi in front / rear to tune that?

Can't correct understeer with tire pressure adjustments. This is a know dynamic to Audi. It's do to their decision to mount the engine forward to the front axle. All that weight just sort of pulls forward.

with AWD you always replace all 4 tires, with 3 differentials you need all the tires to be the same circumference or your putting stress on the drivetrain.. yet another reason I cant believe they say rotation is 'not reccomended'

I did some towing at first 4000 miles, so at 6,500 miles I decided to do free oil change and asked for tire rotation. the dealer in Florida said tire rotation is not recommended by Audi because of Quadro system, but they did it anyway at my request for $24.95. Now i'm not sure if or when i'm going to do next tire rotation. I will check at 15,000 the tire thread - if they are more or less identical - i'm not going to rotate tires anymore.
