Audi Q7 2017 Oil Consumption. Any one else with this issue with this model and year?

Change your oil every 5K miles/6 months maximum using a true synthetic designed for direct injected engines. 10K is frankly way too long. DFI engines produce soot similar to a light diesel engine, this is well documented in the literature. I have never seen oil get so dirty so fast until I owned a direct injection engine. My engine burns no material amount of oil between OCIs at 105K miles.

You're the first Q7 I've seen in these forums that made it to 100K with no oil consumption issues.
I've done the 5K OCI since I bought the car new and it started burning oil at 75K.

I am considering buying a 3.0T. I have a 2014 Q5 2.0T that I purchased in 2017 CPO with 45K miles on it, which I will keep but my kids are getting bigger so at some point I need something larger. The 2.0T has 105K miles on it and doesn't burn any oil but I am one of the only people running a true synthetic formulated for direct injection (soot). If you go over to the Q5 forum there are tons of posts about oil consumption, many more than I see here.. There is a misconception among 2.0T owners and others that it is the only engine that consumes oil. Some of the highest temperatures oil will see is inside the turbo, so it is very hard on the oil. The problem is exacerbated by soot formation in DFI engines.
Sorry to hear that happened to you being so responsible and changing every 5K miles. If you don't mind me asking, what kind of oil were you using?

I'm over 80k now and it typically consumes between no measurable amount to 1/4 qt between 5k OCI (as been for probably 40k miles?). I also do exercise the rev range often but not beating on the motor.

I used the same Castrol Synthetic that the Audi Dealer uses.....

My wife's 2018 Q7 with the 3.0T had regular oil changes (5k miles) and burned almost 2 quarts every 1k miles at 30k miles. A large number of these 3.0T motors in the Q7 do have an issue no matter how often you change the oil.

It is a common misconception that 2013 and later 2.0Ts are better or fixed. All the B8s, including the B8.5's up through and including the 2017 have the same rings (not waffle rings). There are many, many instances of people with 2013 and later burning oil. As more time passes you will see later MYs burning oil.
That is a disappointment about the 3.0T and consuming that much oil at 30K miles if 5K OCIs were used.

Per, I am considering a 2017 Q7 3.0. 67k mi, well maintained by a friend who's wife wanted a Range Rover upgrade. He reports no oil consumption issues, and diligent maintenance. I can't get any real data on how likely I am to encounter a worse case scenario (engine replacement). They sold about 35,000 of them in 2017. I am not sure of the name of the bias, but I am sure that people with that issue rightfully make alot of noise about it, particularly here.
If it's just a case of adding a little oil every now and then, I am not worried about it, but is there anything I can verify before I buy? Ex, if it's already leaking oil, is that a huge red flag?
