Turns out my engine light was due to a bad crank case. A bit under $4k to repair. Ugh. Mechanic told me he's done it for a few cars and that has fixed oil consumption, he's since a couple with bad pistons too. (unsure about the state of mine) plan is to watch the consumption once the new crank case is in.

Default Preventative measeure?

Some use Seafoam for a piston soak. How about adding a little Seafoam before each oil change to keep the buildup from happening instead of waiting for the oil to start burning off. According to the manufacturer, you can add it anytime between oil change intervals. I will add it around 300 miles before the oil change (1 oz/quart of oil), because I cannot check the color of the oil (where's my dipstick?)

Cheers!

The easiest and best way to diagnose an air oil separator is with a digital manometer.

I recommended the Cummins Valvoline Restore product many months ago in this thread but surprisingly no one tried it. This method would be way easier and better than a piston soak. I picked some up and will run it for my next OCI and post the results.

Seafoam in the engine oil will clean off buildup from engine parts lubricated by oil. The problem however resides in the combustion chamber that does not get oil lubrication. So soaking through the spark plug wells or rebuilding are the only options for cleaning carbon.

I had some reserved around the first of the year. Life got in the way before I could try it.

I'll be watching to see how it works for you!

Default seafoam in the gas tank then?

So if the issue is the combustion chamber. Seafoam or (Redline gas treatment which is supposed to be the best) in the gas tank?

Seafoam or any carbon cleaning solution in the gas tank will only clean injectors and the back of the intake valves at the port injection level which is outside of the combustion chamber. Any fuel with additive sprayed into the combustion chamber by the direct injection system is instantly burned and won't be able to clean anything in there.

How about the PCV? Would the fuel additive help clean that up?

Unlikely.

PCV system takes pressurized vapors that accumulate inside the crankcase, valve covers, and other cavities within the engine, separates the oil from that vapor, then allows the vapor to get burnt in the combustion process.

PCV = Positive Crankcase Ventilation.

The video shows them trying Seafoam for a soak first, with little to no improvement. Big improvement after the B12 soak though.
