We can see what Lake says soon but I am almost certain it is a completely different product all the way down to the base oil. For one, the pricetag is a very strong indicator. The "Restore and Protect" is like $25 per gallon and the Cummins product I am talking about is $80/gallon. This is largely because the Cummins product is almost pure ester (a group 5 base oil), which is more expensive. You can see it is an ester for sure in the 110.0 oxidation value in the virgin sample shown below (note that 1.7 cSt viscosity should be 10.7). This is an ester based oil with high Magnesium and a very strong detergent package to do the job.

Please keep the thread posted if/when you try it. Do you also have a CREC Q7 3.0T? I see 2014 Q5 2.0T listed in your avatar.

I will definitely post it to this thread once it is conclusive either way. If it doesn't work I won't be afraid to say so.

I do not have a 3.0T, I have a 2.0T but they use the same ring design and the core issues are exactly the same. If my solution works for a 2.0T it is almost certain to work for 3.0T as well as other engines.

I won't turn this into an oil thread but the oil you run is probably the biggest consideration. If you want to minimize valve deposits it is important to run a low volatility oil (you can check the Noack volatility). It is also important to run high quality fuel (Top Tier) and use a fuel additive with PEA like Techron once per OCI at the end of the OCI just before the oil change. This will keep your injectors and combustion chamber clean.

Here's a new video about the Valvoline Restore line.

Thank you, Glenn. I talked to Lake yesterday and he told me he would be posting this soon, I didn't realize he meant this soon. Thank you for sharing this.

We Audi/VW owners need to ask Valvoline to develop a Restore formula for our engines.

Btw,
Here's a link to purchase directly from Valvoline. I found it via a Sprinter forum.

Earlier in the thread this video talked about this method of cleaning the rings. Wanted to let folks know Amazon has it but if you want cheaper you can use Liqui Molly products

Completely different than what we are talking about. I do not recommend using this product.

Thanks for the link. I only see the "Protect and Restore" product, not the Cummins Restore product.

In Lake Speed's video with the Valvoline lab techs, they discussed the Cummins Restore vs the new Restore Oil line. They described the Cummins formula as being an aggressive product which removed such a high level of carbon deposits that clogging the oil filter was a likely issue. That feature is fine for professionally trained mechanics who understand the process & risks involved, but the Restore Oil is safer for the consumer since it cleans much more gradually. That's probably why the Cummins formula isn't listed on their retail website. I would think they might have it available if you ask for it. However, they may avoid selling it directly to consumers because of liability concerns.

I agree, that is a good point. This is why I will be changing my oil filter at least once mid-OCI, twice if I run it a full 3K miles.
