I haven't yet, though I too have heard good things about it. Will try it out!

Funny thing is I have worked on more Audi VW BMW Porsche engines in the past 40 years than you will ever see in your lifetime so your assumptions are outrageous.

I have been desludging carbon based engines since the mid 2000’s.

There is no way your engine was burning excessive oil at 38,000 miles unless someone had thrashed your engine so try again.

The guy does not even own an MKII Q7 and he does not own any Audi with this 3.0T CREC problematic engine. His job is to attack anybody saying anything negative about their Audis. This is not his first time. Scroll up and you will see him at work along with others who support him. Don't engage the trolls.

Yes, good point - I read enough of this very long thread to see that he's been trolling it for quite a while. You're right that I shouldn't bother responding, given his ludicrous replies that are just antagonistic to people with valid concerns. Total waste of time engaging.

Sucks to have to wade through all the BS to find good tech. There's some here though, so I'll stick around for now.

@AudiAllTheWay I think a lot of people say "It was burning oil super fast", and don't really have the data to back it up. The memory of your average human isn't very good at remembering intervals of fills on something as obscure as engine oil burn rate. Hell, I'm an engineer and have to write that stuff down to make sense of it.

Updating the log again (new data in red).

Little bit more from this one than the last. There was a drive to NC on this change. Again, more highway miles, more time in boost, etc. We're officially moved to Buffalo now, so no more long distance trips for work. We are, currently, still planning on towing to FL at the end of June with the boat. Be interesting to see how that works out. Don't think I can get a piston soak done that quickly considering all of my tools and supplies are in a moving van somewhere between Indiana and New York currently. We'll see.

At this point, I'm not sure exactly where to head. Wife is encouraging me to get something that is less of a liability, AND better on fuel. Rivian leases are available and inexpensive in NY. I don't really want to spend the money on something new though. Would rather fix my oil burn issue, put a tune on it and drive it for another year or two. We'll see.

I went to school in Buffalo, and will be visitng again at the end of the month - nice town, but I don't miss the lake effect snow and grey most of the year. I suggest finding the time to do the soak ASAP, finding out if you can get a piston soak done at a local dealer (IIRC, Audi of Brooklyn is offering to do it locally so other dealers may offer similar) - if it makes a difference in the oil consumption, would keep it longer. You are risking a burnt exhaust valve and a potentially very expensive repair with this much consumption, and personally I would not take that risk and would trade it in.

You're not wrong. If I could do the piston soak NOW, I would. I also agree there is some risk, AND that my burn rate is increasing. Here's a neat chart I just put together.

X-Axis is mileage
Y-Axis is "distance between quarts" (I used a negative distance so the trendline gets a positive slope, data's the same just more visually intuitive)
Data is from the log I've kept here, anyone can recreate or interpret differently if they like, might be good to see some other thoughts on it.

You can see pretty clearly how "cyclical" the burn is. Each change corresponds to a shift downward in the black line. Overall the trend is quite obviously upward though.

Be really neat to see what this looks like if I can get a piston soak done before the 2k mile trip to Florida though wouldn't it !!!!

An Audi dealership is offering the piston soak service? Wow!

Unfortunately, my vehicle has never made it to a 10,000 mile interval without the yellow oil indicator light come on. When I asked the Audi service agent , he states that the car does not typically make it to a 10,000 mile interval because of the large engine. Over the past 5 years the interval to add one quart of oil has been less and less. It has gone from ~9500, 7500, 3000 intervals. On July 22, 2021 I took my car in for the 80,000 mile service. The actual mileage on the odometer was 80,304. The car service was complete and returned. On August 16, 2021, my yellow oil indicator light came on at 81,588 miles. I called the my local Audi Service and was advised to come in for an oil consumption test. I also notified the National Audi Customer Service line to voice my concern for my car. I inquired if oil consumption is a known issue in the Audi Q7 2017. There was not a clear admission of this concern in their vehicles but it made me concern that this could be an issue because of historical issues with Audi's early consumption of oil. I am concerned because this vehicle has the oil indicator light come on in shorter intervals which make me concerned about the longevity and reliability of the engine.
I got 2017 prestige and it has 83k now. Adding quart of oil every 700-900 miles. It’s still on extended warranty. File the claim. Audi did testing and I was able to drive 1400 miles before light came up. Audi claimed the oil consumption within specifications. After adding another quart I was able to drive only 700 miles before add oil light came up. I think Audi dealer cheated and they put extra quart of oil, thus I was able to drive 1400 miles. Not sure what I’m going to do. Going to another dealer or file a complaint with BBB

They build them better now than they used to correct? No shortcuts used in terms of planned obselence/maintenance would ever exist right? 10k oil change intervals recommended by audi is reasonable right? Emissions equipment has only been outfitted with reliability in mind? Your 40 year old legacy engines that were built like tanks are not the same with these overly complicated forced induction engines. Actually I recall my 2.7TT 2001 allroad needed an engine out when one of the turbos was leaking oil. These are not cheap cars to maintain but obviously there was some manufacturing error in some of these engines if there are numerous pages of people complaining of early excessive oil consumption. Is that really that hard to fathom?
