Requirement so you can leave it in neutral for towing, etc.

Short term only. Neutral does not stick. There is a different procedure for towing.

Ahh... good to know about N (not that I use it). Looks like when the system finally "goes to sleep" it just locks reverse. And it saves those "I don't know what happened. I left the vehicle and it rolled away!" type news stories.

When I pressed the off button, I restarted the car without realizing it. Of course the car won’t lock via the remote when the engine is running but since I was in a hurry, I didn’t look back. I really hate this auto stop start feature and hope I didn’t damage my engine. It was relatively cold outside and no engine warnings.
maybe I'm confused but what you describe is not auto stop start. You basically started the car by putting your foot on the brake and pressing the wrong button. The car started without you realizing it and you walked away.

you should put the car in park, release the brake, and press the correct button "stop".

I pulled in a parking spot with the engine running, pressed the brake to stop in the parking spot. The auto-shut off, shut off the engine (which I didn’t notice because of conversation) and I put the car in park and hit the ignition button, thinking I shut the car off, which started the car. The car performed as designed, but some people are people of habit... stop, park, engine off without thinking. I’m sure I’ll get used to it, but apparently I’m not the only person that wishes they could disable it and avoid this situation all together.
