I'm wondering if it will make economic sense to plug it in or not, because I live in an area with relatively high electric rates...17.9 cents per kwh. I know the battery pack is 17.3 kwh (and 35 miles), but I don't know how to translate that into a dollar cost for charging the battery off 120vac. Do I just multiply $0.179 x 17.3 = $3.10 to charge up from zero? Can anyone help, please?

Yes, that is roughly how you calculate it, so 3 dollars for 35 miles. So if your US Gas prices are around 2 dollars per gallon, am I right? A car with a mpg of about 23.5, it would cost also around 3 dollars, so no saving there, unless you can charge at a free public charger or if you have tax benefits. Our electricity is cheaper and gas prices way higher, so it makes more sense. We also get a lot of tax benefit and 50% parking prices etc.

Thanks, kip1. Actually, gas is more expensive than average where I live, too. Maybe $2.80 a gallon for diesel. So still some savings running EV vs diesel.

Actually you will save even more, because these Hybrids never use the full capacity of the batteries. In my BMW I only got about 5 from a 7kwh battery, so probably you will be getting the 35miles from about 14 kwh. These cars only let you use about 80% as discharging a battery fully or fully charging destroys the battery fast. Then again in the winter you wont be getting 35 miles from a cold battery and heaters on. That evens it up again! Then again you wont be gettin 23.5mpg from a suv in the winter also! Also wheel size affects, the smaller the wheel, the better
