Oil Change - Miles or Time?

As I'm sure this applies to many folks, we just haven't driven the car (2017 Q7) much since our last oil change at 40K: 5,000 miles in 12 months. I know the manual suggests that for the next (minor) service based on 10,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first. But, does 5,000 miles seem too early to do this? What do you low-mileage folks do?

I got my first oil change within 2 months of purchasing new car (it was a 2019 model bought in 2020). So it probably sat in the dealer lot for an year. The time based reminder came on and asked for oil change. Dealer did it for free, since its first oil change. car probably had <2K miles then. Got my second oil change few days ago with mileage <6K. So you have to get the oil change irrespective of miles whenever the reminder comes on.

if it is not under warranty I would not worry about it, unless the car sits for many many months at a time (6+) and even then you shouldn't have issues.
Either way, an oil change shouldn't be more than $125 at a dealer or so.
Since you have a 2017 I would recommend an oil and filter change at local mechanic and just keep a receipt if you ever had issues down the road.

I perform my own oil and filter changes, which includes a Blackstone Labs oil analysis ($30), for my benefit and for documenting oil condition.
Keep the receipts for the oil and filter, which I buy as a "Change Kit" from ECS Tuning http://www.ecstuning.com

If low miles then change the oil and filter based on time.
If you change your own oil then keep the receipts. In case the HPFP cam follower craps out.
