Thanks @mhoran89 After a day of back and forth with Audi of Bellevue agreed to fix it. I have Audi 2017 Q7 3.0 Quattro with ~60k miles.

I sent them the bulletin and later mentioned the Federal Emission Warranty which coincides with the bulletin. They had a warranty specialist that had to reach out to corporate.

Bottomline: It is covered and you need to be persistent. Ask your service rep to ask warranty to research it.

Greetings... Just 2 weeks ago my CEL came on, throwing a P05A0 code. After reading this thread, conducting my own research, and feeding said research (TSB, EPA language, forum) to my Audi advisor, I was denied a warranty claim under any clause (I live in FL). Like others, I was quoted $1841.03 (labor $1746, part $94) to install a new motor on the shutter... I don't think so. I'll be calling a reputable local indy shop for a second quote otherwise I'll be doing it myself. Out of curiosity, does anyone know the part number for the Active Air Grille Shutter motor? I can't seem to find it anywhere. TIA

Side note: my Q7 has 36k miles.

I will tell you without comprehensive diagnostic software (VCDS) you won't be able to fully complete this kind of repair at home. Clearing the code once you replace the shutter motor isn't enough. Basic adaptations will need to be set with the new motor in place for the car to understand where the shutters are in their range of travel and to fully calibrate closed/open. I will also let you know there has been some software updates from Audi (only really available through dealers) to help prevent this from happening in the future. My suspicion is many of us who have seen this issue have had a less than optimal software version cause a premature failure of the shutter motor.

It also caused the start/stop function unavailable error code as well. Took it to the dealer and brought the above TSB with me. They checked the software and determined it was not software related and required the shutter motor to be replaced. Based on my conversation with the SA and Tech because I am tuned they will be unable to file the federal emission warranty since it will be required for my car to be hooked up to the Audi Mothership and that alone will TD1 me. Cost of replacing the shutter motor is $1900 before taxes and shop equipment. Indy shop don’t have any appointments in the near term.
Just to make sure I am reading this right you had to pay because of the tune? I just had these errors flag and I have a tune on my q7, so I am debating on having it removed to get this covered by FEW.

Thank @frank_the_tank . My closest dealership is also Audi of Bellevue - in Washington. How did the whole experience turned out? In the end, did the dealership take care of everything? Would be curious as to the person you had worked with. I'll be reaching out to them next week. Thanks.

you removing your tune will not get the work covered under your E1E FEW (8yr 80k miles). the reasoning for this is due to a flash counter in the ECU. every time the ECU gets flashed the counter goes up by 1. if you "retune back to stock" your ECU's flash counter will be 2 higher than expected. for work like this, audi is going to plug into your car and the dealership will pull an extensive amount of info from the vehicle and bounce it off the mothership's records in Germany. what will end up happening is 1 of 2 things.

1. they don't catch the ECU flash counter initially and the work is covered by the E1E FEW and you drive your car off happily. anywhere from a couple days to a couple weeks later you will get a call from the service manager of the dealership and they are going to explain to you they TD1 your vehicle due to software changes and not only is any future drivetrain warranty work not covered for the life of the vehicle, but what you had done is not covered and they will send you a bill. Audi/VW has cracked down on this harder and harder lately and there is no real chance they won't find it. this is an awkward conversation to have and I don't wish it on anyone.

2. you will go in and they will plug in to your vehicle and notice that the software flash counter on the ECU does not match up. they will immediately TD1 flag your VIN and will get a call from your service advisor asking if you want to go through with the work at your expense.

either way best of luck. telling the truth goes a long way.
the other thing is your dealer will give you a software update to prevent this from happening in the future if you go through them and pay for the work.

Good luck. Let us know how it goes. I've had this code for about a year now.

A lot easier than I expected. I’ve never taken a bumper off before. Watched a couple YouTube videos. Took about 4.5 hours. Had a buddy help the last 2 hours. Actually the worst part was getting the new motor in the shutter and getting that back together. Well worth the $1500 I saved from the dealer doing it.

Did you worry about any reprogramming or calibrating that was discussed above?
