Rear license plate screws: Thread size/pitch? Too long w/o a frame
All,
I tried to search this question and came up with nothing. When I had the plates put on my new Q7 this past Friday, the screws (bolts) for the rear plate are too long when I have the dealer take off their plastic promo frame. The bolts woudl bottom out and the plate would more all around as it was not snug to the frame. They stuck a few washers under between the head of the bolt and the plate but it looked silly, so I figure I'll just replace the bolts. Anyone know what thread pitch and size these bolts are? I'm sure the hardware store can measure but figured you all may know. Thanks!

Maybe some info - https://www.audiworld.com/forums/q7-...g-usa-2917930/
If you look into it you'll find out Audi does their plate mounting really screwed up (check out the B9 A4 forum about how the front plates are mounted on those) . The enclosure for those captive nuts snapped into the plastic holder actually allow the screw to only go so far to prevent it from coming into contact with the body underneath & damaging the paint. I took the metal captive nuts out & super glued in nylon replacements. If you do that you just have to be veery careful with the length screw you use.
My Service guy @ my dealer says at every meeting they have with Audi "higher ups" they complain about the mounts on the new Q7 & A4 but it apparently falls on deaf ears.

So I had to change my license plate today, and when i attempted to screw the plate back in, i brought one of the nylon bolts, and the others barely go in far enough to hold the plate (with a lot of play). Does anyone actually know the length and thread type?

ECS sells them. I can't recall the length, but I initially bought longer ones, and ended up buying the shortest they offer as I, like you, run a bare plate. No longer a loose plate to keep from bottoming out on the body (terrible design).

The License Plate screws I used on my MY2019 were 6mm x 1/2inch long.
I used stainless steel Phillips screws from Ace Hardware. I bought the oval headed version and not the flat head style.
They fit perfectly when not using a dealer frame.

I just went through this with the used Q I bought. They are M6x1.0 10mm long. Mine were rusty so I relplaced them with button head hex stainless 12mm long. I planning getting a frame so to prevent bottoming out I used a few stainless washers.
The captive nut short screw is the worst design I’ve ever seen on any plate. I can’t believe Audi still uses it. On my old 2002 B5 S4 I carried spares because they would fall out.
