Default rear seat airbag

Why is this optional? Perhaps if you have young children like a front airbag that requires a certain height/weight? And what does one sacrifice in terms of safety if there isn't an airbag in the second row....this options seems odd. Also are these optional ones mounted on 2nd or 3rd row..seats or curtain?

I think it is for the 3rd row. Here are the European tests. You can see there is not a full curtain in the third row, though there is a curtain. On my car there is an airbag label in the third row but the rear side air bag was not ordered for my car. I haven't seen any cars ordered with it. My SA said unnecessary but I am not sure she knew exactly where it was.

If I'm not mistaken, the EURONCAP test was with a 5 passenger model and thus the curtain only goes back to the second row.

Curtain (head) airbags are standard. Rear side airbag protects the passengers arm and thorax (optional). If you get the option, you cannot deactivate the rear side airbag. Parents with children in car seats may not want them active. It is personal preference.

It is for the outer seats of the second row, according to
