Why is this optional? Perhaps if you have young children like a front airbag that requires a certain height/weight? And what does one sacrifice in terms of safety if there isn't an airbag in the second row....this options seems odd. Also are these optional ones mounted on 2nd or 3rd row..seats or curtain?

Curtain (head) airbags are standard. Rear side airbag protects the passengers arm and thorax (optional). If you get the option, you cannot deactivate the rear side airbag. Parents with children in car seats may not want them active. It is personal preference.
