I have Conti sportcontact 5's on my Q7 and am located near Houston. Today it is 33 F so I am a bit concerned about my summer tires. Should I be?

Drove mine with Goodyear summer tires at 21 F for 3 days. Did not notice temperature cause any concern for driving, only the ice and snow made me nervous.

The standard thinking (or propaganda from tire manufacturers) is that at temperatures under 7C, the rubber compound for summer tire hardens in the cold and provides a lot less grip than at warmer temperatures. This is probably true, however, you will have a lot more grip on those summer tires in the dry than I do on my winter tires in icy conditions. Just keep in mind that the tires will have less grip in the cold and drive accordingly.

when I read the tires were only good for 40 degrees according to continental I could not let my wife continue to drive in 30 degree or less temps in good conscience. If something happened I would always wonder would the winter tire given enough more performance. I went with continental 295/40 r21 dws006 and they work great. Now looking for summer wheels to put the summer tires on.
