3B Engine Questions

I have purchased a 3B engine with 80K miles on it for my 83 UrQuattro and am at the point where I need to plan what to do with it. I would like to have a fast, powerful car but would like to stay whithin a reasonable cost/performance ratio.
Could anyone who has dealt with this before kinda
give me some ideas about cost at different hp ranges and what parts it requires?
I think I would like to have between 300 and 350 hp yet perhaps this would not be necessary for having an enjoyable car. I'd also like to have the option of "adding performance". In other words I would not like to have overlooked something in the internals of the engine that would prevent reliable higher horsepower if I decide that I want more.
I'd really appreciate some ideas.
Thanks,
Greg

I've heard that 350 is the max you should go without first upgrading the internals.
I would/or have the engine rebuilt.
That way you are starting with a new slate.
Many rs2 parts will work wonderfully with the 3b.
300-350 isn't too much to ask from a fresh engine
Also check with other forums for a page applicable to the car that were equipped with the 3b the infos all in there.

First off, I would highly recommend replacing the stock 3B rods (AAN/ADU at a minimum, aftermarket ideally) and rod bearings (AAN). I have personally seen three 3B engines with bent or broken rods, as in holes in the block, when the wick was turned up with stock rods and bearings.
As for performance mods to get you to rod-breaking levels, you will want an RS2 (recommended, but currently NA) or equivilent turbo, RS2 exhaust manifold, larger intercooler, RS2 or equivilent injectors, a good exhaust, and the appropriate ECU software with MAP sensor. These modifications will got you into the 350+ range if done properly. Figure about $5k+ to get you to the 350 range ($2k + for turbo and manifold, $400+ for injectors, $500+ for ECU mod and MAP sensor, $500+ for rods and bearings, $500+ for intercooler). Notice I assume that you do all the labor and have already spent the money to do the conversion to get it running and driving in the car. If you go through a shop, expect to pay more for the components. If you are resourceful and can find used parts from Europe, you can save a bit.
Contrary to popular belief, the RS2 intake will NOT fit without major modification.
BTW, just because you have the "big" components, don't think that you are done spending big money on the swap. The "little" stuff really adds up, both in time and money. BTDT.

Thanks for all the good responses! I think I'm going to go for it, but it will take some time. That's OK - I have plenty of life left in the original 10V motor.

I'm getting information from several sources that the stock bottom end is fine for the hp I am seeking - One reputable person had a 200 tuned to 450 hp with the stock bottom end. Important though, as long as I am not racing the engine. If using the engine for race purposes, they agree that rods and bearings should be upgraded. Any comments? TIA.
