Default Sort of..

Sort of..

If you are talking about the urq cluster in the brown & square-ish (old style) dash, and putting it in the newer 'roudish' (black) style 4K dash..

You can use the actual UR cluster, but need to use the 4k 'plastic' surround (to match the 4K dash).

In other words, use the 4K plastic bit btween the cluster proper, and the dash (the cluster 'window' as it were).

If you are planning on putting the ur cluster in a 4K, the urq speedo may have a threaded connection for the speedo cable, while the 4K speedo may be 'twist lock'.

Also, wiring may be a bit different..

So it really begs the question:
Why? Actual gauges and stuff aren't really very different.

What are you *really* trying to do? :-)

(If you are really thinking of swapping a newer style 4Kq dash into a urq, then yes, it's easy! Cluster wiring and speedo cable stay the same. You just have to swap the plstic 'front' part of the cluster. Switch wiring has to change though, to match the new switchgear)

Default Dash swap

I'm tracking down parts for a 4kQ dash swap so it sounds like I might as well use the 4k cluster. All wiring will be comming out of the Ur anyway.
Thanks for the info.

The above statement is hardly true. Its no where near "easy" Its possible, and I have done it, but of all the words I yelled while doing that swap - easy wasn't one of them ;o]

But only the CLUSTER wiring!

Lots of work splicing all the switchgear, but it was pretty straightforward. (But then, I *like* electical work!)

Mechanically,, was easy too (once you figure out how the dash mounts).

Took me a 'realxed' day of work to change everything over.

Clearly, our experiences differ! If you could, perhaps expand on what troubles youhad changing the dash over?

Default Please do ! :)

Please tell more !! Since the 83 has a terrible elec system would it make sense to source a whole 4kQ wiring harness and fuse block ???

Default Swapping Harness..

>Since the 83 has a terrible elec system would it make sense to source a whole 4kQ wiring harness and fuse block ???

Make sense? Yes..!

Realistically easy? No..

In some ways, it'd be easier to just replace the old style fuse box occasionally (treat it as a consumable), rather than rewire. (Apparently, they are still available from Worldpac. ~150.00 maybe?)

I'd suggest taht unless you plan to have th interior out of the car for some other reason, it'd just be too much work.

( I'd also probably look at using the harness from a coupe, rather than a 4k, as they are more of a 'similar' build.)

Remember that when you change the harness, you'll have to change a lot of the associated connectors to 'devices' in the car too. For example, window motors changed connector style, so you'd have to either change the motor or harnees end of the connectors... Lots of things of the same idea all over the car.

Lots of work there!

Default Swapping Harness / Dash

There are several discrepancies that I found during my dash swap. I used Huw Powels guide and found that extremely helpful. But even Huw states that your mileage may vary during the mating of the two harnesses - and mine did.

Its the little things... For example, my dash lights and my license plate light come on with the key, so far I just chose to live with it that way... The two blinker / hazard systems are also different between the two cars and I found that to be a PITA as well. I have blinkers, and I think I have hazards - but I'd have to double check the hazards, I remember somethings being slightly goofy.

I don't think it was so much a question of my ability as much as my desire to tinker with that sort of project, I just don't enjoy it...

I will probably have the dash apart soon as Im going to start my 034efi swap here shortly. If any of the bugs that I mentioned above sound easy to trace / fix, give me a few pointers and I will give it some effort.

Default one more thing...

Saw the post about swapping replacing the fuse box too. If you can salvage it, be sure to TAKE THE LOAD OFF it. There are many ways to extend the life of that fuse box - start with adding relays!

Relay your headlights remotely and relay your fuel pump remotely - if I remember, your car, which shared a garage with my first UrQ may already have the fuel pump relayed, cuz I probably did it for Scott.

What are some of the other electrical systems that we like to relay guys? I thought there was more. Maybe clean switched power to the ECU as well...

Default No, use UrQ cluster. Fits into newer dash fine.
