Diff leak, what to do?
Hi guys, I am 1000 miles from home and have developed a substancial leak on the left side of the back diff. Can I get back home only adding more fluid or do I have to repare before a 1000 mile trip??
thanks for your input.

Not cheap, but pretty much your only option if yours is leaking AFAIK. Installation is a little tricky, but doesn't take too long. I would recommend really cleaning up the sealing surface on the CV flange with Scotchbrite or your new seal will leak as well. If the differential is noisy and/or there is any play in the flange, just replacing the seal isn't going to fix the problem. At that point, a rebuild or replacement is in order.
HTH!
P.S. MOST IMPORTANT: Make sure that your remove the filler plug before you drain fluid from the diff. That way if the fill plug is damaged and can't be removed you won't be stuck with an empty differential that can't be filled.
