Default So what size batteries are people really using?

Did some searches and found Type 41 was recommended. The Bentley barely mentions the battery, except for standard testing boilerplate. The ISV was similarly moot. The owner's manual was just silly: "Check what's in there and put in another one that's the same size" or words to that effect. Gee, thanks.

Despite some misgivings, I went out and bought a Type 41 (Wally Mart, as recommended) and the darn thing doesn't fit, or at least not all the way down to the bottom of the battery box. Spec on a Type 41 is supposed to be 11 3/16 X 6 7/8 X 6 7/8. The top of the battery box isn't quite 11 1/2 on my car, anyway, and the bottom is smaller. It should barely fit, but I tried 3 different brands today and they're all just a bit too big, or look like they'd need some type of BFH assist. Even then all of them would stick up more than I'd like- ideally I'd want the tops of the posts to be flush with or below the top of the battery box.

I called a couple of friends with UrQs, and the first thing they all said was "It's a Type 41".

The second thing they all said after I got them to really look at their cars was "Hey, it doesn't fit!"

Anyone have a factory reference for UrQ battery size, a known original battery, or one that's exactly the same size as OE? I've got one of the Type 41's crammed in there, but I doubt I'm going to be able to get the hold down bolted in. That means I'll fail tech as soon as I take it to the track- not good. The reference chart below seems to indicate any number of batteries that would really, really fit, but it would be nice to know what the factory installed rather than just picking one at random.

Sitting in my car is a Wally World typ 41-1 and it fits perfectly. I'm surprised your problem is length, I thought you'd say width as it may not be seated correctly. The nice thing about top mount batteries is that you can plug and play till you find what work within your power constraints. I have another in my V8 with is similar, don't have it this second to check but close size, a bit more power and handles! to lift it in and out, I'll grab the #.

Default I've got a Wally Mart 41-4 (suggested via search) and it's crammed in there...

I'll try to get some pics later, but I had to cut off the extensions that held the carry handle before it would come close to sitting in the bottom of the battery box, and I'm pretty sure it's still not all the way down.

In terms of where the problem is, we may have our terms confused- the problematic dimension(s) are the height (sticks up more than I'd like) and width (across car, longest dimension on battery). That's where it's a squeeze.

My Wally 41-4 has NO handles so we probably do not have the same battery. Sounds like you have a typ 41 but not the same sub type.

Default I have a brand new Autobahn dealer installed battery in mine

however, I'm at work and the car's at home. I can get a few measurements off it and post them up when I get home.

Default If you could post all dimensions that would be great- Thanks.

My car is missing the battery hold down- I suspect it was left out because you couldn't fit it and the Type 41 battery in the box, but I'll know for sure in a week or so when the new hold down shows up. It turns out it was one of the few parts I wanted that are still available new.

heres a pic, you can see the top of the battery sits at/below with the lip of the battery box. It is snug, I'd guess it is a bit bigger in all dimensions than the stock unit.

Default Mine doesn't sit down that far- might if I used a BFH ;-) Do you have the vent tube hooked up..

or the hold down? I can't see the either from that angle. My car is missing the grommet that the vent tube passes through and the hold down- fortunately they're both still available new.

Default I'm at my daughters dance recital getting the evil eye...

but if you check my pic poster, I have pictures of the battery and a ruler showing 10 3/4 width across the posts and 6 1/2 front to back.
It still looks alitlle high to me though.
