Hello all:
As far as I 'understand', the really weird looking urq rear brake calipers can be replaced with 4kq rear calipers, if you also swap the parking brake cables at the same time. That parking brake cable change also required changing a piece at the parking brake handle end, to accomadate the two cable 4kq parking brake setup?
From what I understood, original urq rear calipers used a one piece parking brake cable that did both sides, and 4kq uses two separate cables.
Well... Went at it, and I had two parking cables and the 4kq style parking brake attachment point. But the existing cables are not like any 4kq cables *I've* even seen! They are clearly designed to work with the weird urq calipers.
So here's my question:
What's going on with my oldstyle (yet 2 piece?) cables? Did I end up with some 'inbetween model year' stuff that ur's seem to be blessed with, or is my information about old parking brake cables being one piece, really misinformation?
Other than the cables (which I did't have time to install yet anyway), the 4Kq calipers went on without any problems..

Are your calipers 853 415 623?
How about adapting this bracket? It should go on the threaded rod in place of the one piece half moon guide...maybe?

I don't know. But they are really weird looking! They have some bits on them that make me thing that they have been adapted from another Audi model of some sort. (Such as plate 857 615 437 on the inboard side of them)
>How about adapting this bracket instead of using the one piece half moon guide?
Well, that's the thing. I ALREADY have that bracket, but what I think are 'old style' (but separate) cables.
Very odd..

The part number has been dropped without replacement.
The good thing is that you have the correct pull rod and compensating lever for the later cables and calipers. Like Martin said, the later cables are cheap and the calipers are readily available, so you can get rid of those old rear calipers quite painlessly.

the UR and '80-84 80/90 Avant quattro's. Looks like some old stock piece.
The reason I asked about the caliper, is that according to some Euro data I have it appears to be the same as the later G54 on the 80/90Q.
That part number is a Euro part, so I wasn't sure if the US models had it or not. I'll try and remember to take some pics of the G54 caliper tomorrow.

There are 2 cable types listed for the 'loop' type urq application. The first type used two cable locks (overlap the cables and use a cable nut on each end), the other type was a continuous loop single cable. Sounds like you have the 2 piece old style loop setup. You need the late 4kq app S9 shows on the drawing that would be the late 2 piece cables (with 2 eyelets that go thru the handle yolk)
I've had and seen all 3 types on a variety of urq's with no real rhyme or reason to the early loop style.

It's a bolt on, and is used in the G60 front app on the 20vt urq's in europe.
As I just did this to an 83 last friday, I will remind all, that if you do this, you must clean off the mounting tabs on the upright where the carrier attaches. The footprint is larger on the v8 application, and rust under it (from the old footprint) can cause a lot of problems.
You also use the urq carrier mounting bolts (shorter) with this modification.
The FA shows a different brake prop valve for the 20vt application, but I find the stock valve works pretty darn well with G60 fronts and v8 rears.
That said, if doing the v8 rears, I would *not* do it without doing the G60 fronts, the rears lock up before the fronts on a G54/v8 combo
