Default Sounds like the cop had a reaction time issue.

I highly doubt a 1000 accelerated like that. That means that the ave speed over that run was 205mph. I very highly doubt he was able to go 205 let alone 230-240 to get an ave of 205.

Gotta love pigs.

Default My race bike will go that fast.

If I gear it right. A stock CBR1000RR wil not however.

Default ??? He was clocked from an airplane over 1/4 mile span.

Don't see how acceleration comes into the picture.

I suspected this could be a bogus story, but I heard the trooper/pilot interviewed on NPR last night.

He said he had clocked a bike at 162 on the same stretch of road this spring, but that one eluded capture. This must be a sweet piece of highway, eh?

Default The cop used a stopwatch, not a radar gun.

That means he calculated how long it took the bike to go from point A to point B, later deriving an average velocity. He said the bike was accelerating over this distance, so we know his speed was not constant. Given the average speed recorded was 205mph and the bike was accelerating, he must have been traveling much faster then 205 by point B. That's just not happening. If the story is true of course ; - )

For simplicity, lets say the speed was constant @ 205mph. That means the cop had ~0.25 seconds to start and stop the watch over that 1/4 mile. I highly doubt he did so, or accurately for that matter (even if the speeds were lower). At 205 mph, you're covering 3.41 miles/min.

Sounds like a good streach.

Default seems like its only a 3-4% potential error.

and I couldn't find anywhere where it specifically stated that he was accelerating at the time the readings were taken.

also do you really think that someone who goes anywhere near 200 mph is *not* goign to modify their bike? I think the fact that it was modified is probably a given.

Default Check the math.

The cop said he timed the bike over a 1/4 mile interval, or 1320 ft (I didn't hear anything about accel, but no matter).

205 m/h *(5280 ft/m)/(3600s/h)= 300.67 ft/s

1320 ft / (300.67 ft/s) = 4.39s

Even if his thumb shakes 0.1s each time (he _was_ a pretty old trooper), worst case is 0.2s error, or about 10%. So, the bike was doing no less than 180-185mph.

Pretty sure the judge won't kick this one on methods...

Default Ops, you're correct...

I was wrong on the 1/4mi time.

In this account, the officer said one of the riders shot forward. I'm guessing they were racing. Either way 205mph ave just doesn't seem likely without heavy modifications.

Default I think you need some drag forces when going that fast. Slightest bump could get you airbourne.

Crazy motha, I shiver just trying to hit 120 mph.
