Bought a house that has hardwoods under the carpet. Hardwoods are 50 years old and of undetermined condition (Carpets are brand new and I haven't gotten the nerve to pull them up). I'd like to get someone out their to give me an idea of whether they can be restored and at what cost.
Anybody have any recommendations or contacts?

Great Danish Craftsman Hardwood Flooring
(303) 471-0491
Not the cheapest but not the most expensive. He refinished about 2000 Sq feet for me and we have had about 4 friends use him as well.
He has a website but I can't find it. Jan Wetterstein is the owner and does most of the work but his wife often answers the phone. Very nice guy and very much a perfectionist.

...the 540 though. I am a bit unsatisfied about the unresponsiveness when I hit the gas to get a quick burst, probably the automatic takes some getting used to and shifts way too soon and rides in to high a gear for my taste. Need to get used to the tip I think but I often find myself getting lazy using it and don't like the automatic 1st to 2nd shift.
Since I have been stuck so much in traffic with a recent job change, I had to get an auto as the 6-sp was killing me. Haven't had time to check my gas mileage, probably because I am a bit scared. I gotta stay off this forum too because knowing what mods I can do only has me itching to spend more money.
I did want to contact you at some point about lowering the car a bit. I need to drive this car all year round and want to ensure I have enough clearance and hated driving the 540 2mph over speed bumps, into my driveway and anywhere the road was uneven. Any thoughts?
Do I need new shocks and springs? How much lower will it go?
Thanks,

I've done several floors myself. Figure on it taking a weekend. The biggest PITA is the dust, but that can be cleaned up. If you rent the equipment, make sure you go to a good hardwood floor shop that rents high quality sanders - I recommend Rock Solid Hardwoods on 6th and Bryant. They'll even show you how to do it.

Prices must have skyrocketed for that service.
In 2001 we had ~700 sqft + a set of stairs refinished for $900.
Same boat as you, 50 year old hardwood under carpet. Does the $3500 price include the refinisher removing the carpet, pad, staples, tack strip, & nails? I hope so...The wife & I did all that work so the guy only had to show up & sand.
I used Armbruster Hardwood. I've recommended him (one man operation) to 3 other people, all who have used his service and all happy.
