Wife and I are looking at getting a 99 SR5 4runner with 205k for a great price. 1 owner, dealer service, TB water pump replaced at 160? I think 160.
Just curious if anyone else has a Toy and how it has held up.....

I think he finally had to do a head job on his current runner at around 220K. I'm not that in the know, but the older ones are woefully underpowered, but reliable as all hell and wheel great in the snow.

The 3rd-gen 4Runners (96-02) are one of the best vehicles ever built ever anywhere ever. Ever. The V6 is bulletproof, the I4 even more so. My last Tacoma had 160k on it before I sold it last year, and the only issue I ever had with it was I had to rebuild the starter at about 150k.
If you have any questions, lemme know.

but the V6 is weak. I had to put a blower and 8 psi pulley on it to fix it. Mileage went up +1 too
My PS pump went out at 30k miles but was fixed under warranty.
My buddy has a blown runner with high miles. We had to replace a knock sensor and harness under the lower manifold - it's a common problem but a total PITA. Water pump went out at ~100k.
My other buddy has high mileage 3rd gen and his TPS went out about 150k.
The wheels are lug-centric so no one ever balances the wheels properly. They have a few issues but nothing like an Audi

Going to have the dealer take a look today. Had to bench the A6 for a few months now. Already at 100% of cars value in repairs in the last 5 months. Blah.

I have an '02 and have thought about the blower, but not sure on the detonation issues and the reliability after the V6 is blown. your thoughts?

I have had a 99 4-runner for over 2 years now. 150,000 miles and nothing broke besides the cosmetic damage I caused
I do alot of traveling bettween COS and Salina, KS for school. Mines is not supercharged so its not as cool as brads.....but I got black wheels on my runner....

If I run 85 octane and lug the motor in 5th gear it pings a little. If I lug it at sea level it pings like an SOB even with 93 octane.
I checked plugs at around 36k miles and saw no evidence of detonation or pre-ignition damage. So I bought the URD 2.1 pulley, cooler t-stat, and cooler plugs. The charger screams like a dieing kitty now! I haven't noticed any issues with 91 octane. There's definitely a knee in power curve though - more power up top. I think it's rich on the low end and a little lean on the top. Last I checked the plugs looked fine but that doesn't mean a whole lot. The truck has 50k miles on it now.
My buddy moved to Phoenix and HAD to put the URD fueling kit on his blown runner, it was pinging all the time in every gear.
My other buddy here in town put a blower and URD 2.2 pulley on his high mileage automatic runner and it pings a little now and then when it's hot (91 octane). Of course, you have less control over the rpms with the auto.

Check out my thread at TTORA
