Aside from Quattro, what's the best AWD vehicle on snow/ice?
Just curious what you guys think. I have an Acura MDX that the wife drives that has electromagneticly adjustable F/R torque controlled by an electronic vehicle stability assist system that incoporates traction control and seems pretty high tech and has gotten good magazine reviews, but I don't really know what is the best (aside from Quattro, of course). Thoughts?

SUV's (including the Acura) are just too tall IMHO to be considered good.
odds of going over if you get sideways are way to high. At this point, given the good in snow and ice criteria, I'd have to go with a subaru - likely a legacy GT.

I agree that height is a problem
Which is why I steered the wife to one that had a wide wheelbase.
But I'm more curious about pure traction, rather than rollover risk. Obviously cars with a lower center of gravity win at that.

wouldn't traction be more a factor of tires than anything else?
Things like stability and rollover would be something where an avant style vehicle would be better than a SUV. But for just traction in the snow/ice, thats more tires than anything else.

88 Mazda 323 GTX would be my vote.
A friend and I would ours in the ice race series at Rainbow Falls. I don't think anything else ever won the open class. We also ran them at the Winter Driving School in Steamboat a few times. One of the best bangs for the buck, imho.

one with good snow tires
my roommate's GTI with Hakka's has better traction in the snow than our Tacoma in 4wd with all seasons. discussions of height and weight are futile as neither will increase friction in all cases. so buy whatever FWD or AWD and put some good snows on it.
