C5 A6 Avant <> B6 S4 Avant
Time for the quarterly "what would make a better family wagon than the '03 C5 A6 Avant"...
I wouldn't mind another B5 S4 in Avant form, but wife refuses to "trade down" to older cars unless their model number rhymes with Fine-Wine-Free. Very nice, but no wagon and our daughter isn't off to college for another 15 years. We are also too frugal to buy new when there are so many nicely depreciated "pre-owned" choices -- which rules out the B8.
Anyone know of '05 S4 Avants for sale local beyond the ones on Craigslist? How about C5 S6s -- not smaller, but definitely familiar. Or any reasons beyond styling and lower miles to look at the 05.5 B7s S4? The new look has never grown on me, but it is more modern looking.
The B6 vs C5 good:
S4 Horsepower: 340 hp (third gear FTL!)
A6 Horsepower: 220 hp
The bad:
S4 Curb Weight: 3936 lbs (Murphy's Law "newer = heavier")
A6 Curb Weight: 3924 lbs
S4 Manual: 15 mpg / 21 mpg (the Tip same/worse?)
A6 Auto: 18 mpg / 26 mpg
The ugly:
S4 Rear Leg Room: 34.3 in. (forget stilettos, flats are in honey)
A6 Rear Leg Room: 37.3 in.
S4 Luggage Capacity: 13.4 cu. ft. (oh yeah, pack light babe!)
A6 Luggage Capacity: 36.4 cu. ft.

Wish the B8s were out -- like two years ago
Don't mind sucky mileage that much 'cos we don't drive much being Boulder bums during the week. Not that I'm dying for Cayenne Turbo mpg.
B5 S4 Stage IIer is staying and is fast enough for my limited driving. Future S4 $$$ need to go for BBK and suspension based on the last canyon run with P-car buds. Had no trouble keeping up, but more brakes would not have hurt on the way back.
This thread is about something a little faster and less wiggle for the family outings like day trips to Denver and ski weekends.
The B6/B7 rear seat is uncomfortably tight, but it might give the better half incentive to sit up front and gripe less about twisties induced motion sickness. My daughter makes roller coaster references when she's in the S4, so I'd like to raise her with a higher motion tolerance
Does your crew run the Avant for longer family drives, or the M3? How are you liking the M3 as a daily? Doesn't look like the 335xi is coming out in wagon form for 2009. Already had our Swede swinging days, but maybe the last V70R is worth a test drive? Our S70 had a decent rear seat.

I should probably test drive one -- never driven a 2.0T
I was just looking at side-by-side pics of the B6 S4 vs B7 S4, and stock the B6 looks better to me. With the right wheels, tint and color the B7 gains a bit.
B7s have the same rear leg room as a B6 -- no?

Depends, sometimes one, sometimes the other
The M works well for us, as Mia fits fine in the back. If we need to carry a bunch of stuff, we take the avant. We'll take the avant up skiing, the M3 won't be venturing up there.
I like the M3 as a daily. It's a very sharp handling car, but is very comfortable.

Had a B7 A4 avant 2.0T loaner from Prestige
Back seat wasn't any bigger than the B6 from what I could tell.
Nice car tho, 2 liter makes noticably more power than the 1.8 in my wife's avant.
