Default So, looking at road conditions, 285 to 9 does seem like the best route for tomorrow.

It looks like it's about 100 miles from Denver to Breck going that route. So, that's about 20 miles more than taking I-70.

Is the 285/9 route pretty straight forward? Anything I need to know with regards to taking this route?

Default FYI on road conditions: cotrip.org is the CDOT website, works ok on PDA. Links for PDA users inside.

The big thing is road conditions and webcams, but since the webcams can't be easily PDA surfed to, I'm going to try and compile a list of them here. Ok I just tested this - it gets you to the webcams without all the messy javascript provisioning that my PDA browser chokes on, and gets you realtime traffic views.

Default yeah, i've been looking at that today

Vail Pass EB is closed right now. Consolidating all those links is definitely helpful, though. i'm going to bookmark them on my Blackjack.

Default 285 <-> 9 only as a last resort

CDOT will be working their rears off this weekend keeping 70 open for the ski traffic, so I wouldn't worry too much about going that route. 285 is officially a major speed trap; see posts on here in the recent past this. 9 is probably a bit dicey in the snow, and almost certainly not as well plowed as one would hope. On a good day in the middle of the summer, I'd expect that route to take a minimum of 3-4 hours from Denver. In other words, unless 70 is closed, don't bother.

Default Good luck getting there, EB I-70 over Vail is closed now, WB may close later.............

took a co-worker 7 hrs to get back to Denver from GJ today. He left denver at 2am, made it there by 8am, left GJ at 9:30 took an hour nap on the way back and finally got in at 5:30. He was livid, was involved in an accident near Copper Mtn., idiot in a Subaru with ****ty tires slid into the semi.

Default I disagree. I take it all the time. It is a speedtrap, but there's no need to speed.

It's takes about 2hr 30min. Hwy9 isn't horribly maintained. I'd be more worried about the wind blowing you off the road between Kenosha and Red Hill Pass.

Srsly though, I've beaten people in stop-n-go I-70 traffic to Breck going this route plenty of times. It's definately not my preferred route, but with tomorrow's crowds and the single lane on I-70, this would be one of those times I'd consider it.

Default That's about it. Just be sure NOT to exceed the speed limit in Fairplay. SRSLY

It's THE biggest speedtrap in CO. He'll pull you over for 1-mph over. I usually putter through at 18mph.
