they opened up the Blue Sky Basin today, so it was about 2 feet of powder. lots of fun!
I got up EARLY this morning and got on the road before 5:30am. I took I-70 with no problems. Got to Vail in 2 hours from Wash Park.
I left Vail at 3pm (BAD TIMING) and when it took me 1.5 hours just to get to Breck, i decided to give the 9/285 route a try. I have to say that taking that route when it was getting dark and the snow started coming down hard was probably not a good idea. Add to the fact that I'd never taken that route before... You absolutely had to have 4WD/AWD to make it up/through some of those passes. Anyways, from Breck to back home, it took me about 3.5 hours. I had to deal with pretty much white-out conditions up in the passes and couldn't see more than 5 feet in front of me at times. I was pretty much just following the tracks in front of me, hoping that some poor soul didn't drive off a cliff, because i would be soon to follow.
So, i would have to say that under normal conditions, this would definitely be a great alternate route to take. But, if it's snowing, beware!! Kudos to Audi Quattro, stick shift and Dunlop M3s!! Definitely saved my butt today!!

I was in the back bowls at around 1pm when i decided it was time to get on the road. unfortunately, it took me almost 2 hours to get from the back bowls to my car. i didn't anticipate that...

However, the drive was top 10 worst I've ever been in. The drive there wasn't too bad, especially taking Frontage Road to bypass the bridge work. But the drive home took over 3 hours. All these rear/front wheel drive cars getting stuck on the hill up to the divide. A mustang was doing spin outs blocking up 2 lanes. Could smell the tire smoke a mile away. Why do you take a rear wheel car to go sking on a snowy day???

i moved to Denver from Philly a little over a year ago. Back when i was in Philly, i drove 1.5 hours to get to the local ski "mountain". From Denver, it typically takes me 1.5 hours to get to Breckenridge. If I have to deal with some bad traffic and an extra couple hours of driving every once in a while for powder conditions, I'll happily take it.
