Default ipod repair. (hard drive repair)

First off let me jsut say that I am glad I chose not to sell my ipod to a couple of members here. The hard drive stopped working a few days ago.

After reading many things on "ipodlounge.com" and a few other places I have found that you can replace the hard drive. Cost is around $100 for the part.

I also found a "service" on ebay that says that they can actually "fix" the harddrive for $30 + shipping.

(ipod is out of warranty and Apple wants $275 to fix it:thumbsdown: )

Just curious if anyone here has ever fixed one, had one fixed, used the service, or knows of someone local that can do the same thing?

For $30+ shipping it might be worth fixing. (3rd generation 20G). For $100+ I think I would rather upgrade to a new one and give this one to a friend to have and fix.

Default There aren't many problems with a HD which could be 'fixed'

For that price they can't be doing much more than reformatting. If there's actually a mechanical, magnetic, or electrical problem with the HD, your only choice is to replace it.

Default Agree. Probably best to just replace it.

Usually it's the batteries that go out with these things. I'm sure you could find someone here to replace the HD for you, but for $100 for the part you are probably better off getting a new one.

By the way, if you do decide to get a new one, check out this site, where you can buy one in a funky color if you want. Black and white get boring...

colorwarepc.com

Default Did you take it up to 12000 ft altitude? The seals on those microdrives can't handle that.

That's why I'm still using a solid state Creative Nomad, instead of jumping on the Ipod bandwagon.

Default Am I the only person here that reads instruction manuals? :)

Read under "Environmental Requirements" (top of the right hand column.

http://www.apple.com/ipod/specs.html</a

Default That's a freaking bummer. There should be a warning label.

At least planes are pressurized to 10,000 ft (I think I read that somewhere).

Default it says, "Maximum operating altitude: 10,000 feet"

WTF? um... mine has been above 10k a couple times. Is it going to fly apart one day while driving over Vail Pass?
