Need some help with a bad cat...
#12
Eventually they might throw codes but often they just quietly send plausible but wrong signals...
but no O2 sensor specific codes until the signal is implausible. By then the cat bed is often bad from the engine running a bit rich. If you replace the O2's early enough you can save the cat, or prevent it from getting wrecked in the first place. How many miles are on your car? At or before 100K miles is when I would strongly recommend changing the O2s, at least the front one(s) and then do the rear(s) if you get a cat efficiency code. Doing the front ones should keep the engine running right and the cats healthy, the rear ones just monitor the health of the front cats.
I am running Bosch 13193 sensors I bought through Amazon. These are OEM Chevy Trailblazer sensors but appear to be the same as the universal Bosch sensor for the A8 (and probably other Audis that use the newer 4 wire planar sensor) except with a GM connector and no splice kit. $42 shipped from Amazon, a great price for a Bosch planar sensor.
If it were my car and had over 80K on it, I would change the O2's and see if the cat efficiency CEL's do not come back right away, and go away for good after a month or two. Make sure you do some long drives to get out of open loop and the cats nice and hot. On the other hand if you are paying for labor and can get a rebuilt cat for a good price it might be smarter to just do the cat and O2's in one go. Depends on labor rates and if you feel lucky.

So how did that go down, did they hassel you about it....or
did they just pull the codes and then replace it? Did it error have to occur multiple times before they would do any thing?
Prestiege...McDonald?
Thanks
