Do some runs and get the readings from the MAF. You should then be ale to reference if your readings are in the acceptable range.
Just an idea if you ahve trouble getting someone to swap MAFs with you.

i just unplugged it and the car runs MUCH better. so it is on the way out.

That depends, if you want to try the dealer and hope they don't detect the chip it should get replaced if you are under 70K miles under warranty. However I would call to confirm that first. If it is to be covered you HAVE to go to the dealer, they wont cover it anymore if you go to an indy shop or DIY. Also, if you have a K&N or any non OEM air filter I would swap in a OEM before heading in.
Be aware if you do go the dealer route they HAVE to prove that it can't be anything else by doing pressure tests and all that to look for leaks.
I got screwed because they said I had a loose clamp at one of my Bypass Valves. Prestige charge dme $98 for that. I was about a mile from there when the light came back on. I called in and they said, yep its the MAF bring it back in.
Point being, make sure everything else is tip top.
